Hot Topic Rebrand, 2025.

The Hot Topic Brand Refresh reimagines the brand's identity while staying true to its alternative roots. As a fan, former employee, and sponsored creator, I brought firsthand insight into the brand and its audience.

The project focused on creating a more cohesive visual identity, strengthening the brand's mission, and deepening its connection with its core community.

Who doesn’t love nostalgia with a twist?

Drawing from Hot Topic's origins as a music-focused retailer founded in 1989, I developed a refreshed design system that unifies the brand's diverse influences while preserving its rebellious, music-driven identity.

Another asset I wanted to highlight was the community-based work carried out by the Hot Topic Foundation. The foundation supports marginalized communities through an in-store, non-tax donation system.

I developed a concept where individuals supported by the foundation create drawings and sketches that are printed on retail bags. This approach emphasizes the punk DIY ethos while honoring the communities the foundation serves.

Through research and customer perspectives, I found that while Hot Topic’s eclectic style reflects its punk and alternative influences, the brand often lacks a consistent visual system. This can make the in-store and online experience feel visually crowded and difficult to navigate.

By revisiting the company’s origins as a music-focused retailer founded in 1989, I used that foundation to guide a refreshed design system that organizes the brand’s diverse influences while preserving the rebellious, music-driven spirit that defines Hot Topic.
